Early October, after commissioning work was completed at Volga JSC power complex (NiGRES), the condensing steam turbine was brought up to rated capacity.

The new turbine, manufactured at Kaluga Turbine Plant, has successfully passed comprehensive tests and operated for 72 hours at maximum load.

This event became the most important step in solving the energy efficiency increase issue of Volga JSC as a whole within the framework of Company investment project implementations.

“Retrofitting and upgrading of Volga JSC power complex (NiGRES) calling for replacing decommissioned R-32-130 turbine with new K-27-1.3 turbine (and generator) is part of the first stage of the priority strategic development project of the mill with investments exceeding 5 bln rubles,” General Director of Volga JSC Sergei Pondar commented. “The project is oriented on expansion of container packaging papers and cardboard production volumes, increase of raw material processing capacity and enhancement of mill energy efficiency.”

The work was carried out using innovative domestic equipment, i.e. a steam turbine with an exhaust section customized to power complex (NiGRES) operating conditions, with an automated control system (ACS) based on the INTAI software and hardware complex using domestic Regul R500 controllers and Flfa Platform software. Up-to-date 110 kV SF6 circuit breakers, a brushless diode excitation system, and a relay protection and automation system using microprocessor technology were also installed.

“By virtue of this project implementation, not only a new 27.1 MW/h power facility was commissioned at K-27-1.3, but the possibility of full steam loading of existing TG No. 2 (R-32-130) was ensured as well, which made it possible to optimize the heat balances of the power complex (NiGRES) and additionally generate 10-20 MW/h (depending on the season) on the existing equipment. The project ensures reduction in specific fuel consumption for electricity generation, it was implemented on tight schedule and with good quality, as comprehensive tests showed. I appreciate excellent work of the project team and NiGRES staff!” the project initiator and curator, Deputy General Director for Auxiliary Unit Vasily Stepchenko added.

Installation of K-27-1.3 bottom turbine made it possible to support the existing and future energy consumption of Volga JSC, increased the efficiency of the power complex as a whole, ensured the delivery of full power at any time of the year, and increased the reliability of energy supply to residents of Balakhna, social and industrial facilities in the region.
